Tips for Traveling in Europe

Thanks so much for joining us for another Tips for Traveling in Europe! We’re honored and thrilled that you’ve chosen to visit.

Let’s recap. Our first week, we discussed research, specifically itineraries, hotels and airfares. Next we went over packing, how much, how little, what to bring and why. Then, we covered the trip itself, on the plane and when you get there. Last week, we discovered ways to get around, and how public transportation is a way of life in Europe, unlike most of the US.

Tips for Traveling in Europe

Public transportation is a way of life in Europe.

This week is our final post, and we’ll be chatting about cultural differences and overall experiences.

 Cultural Differences

Why do we expect foreign travelers to know English when they visit the US? In unfamiliar territory, we were thrilled to happen upon people who spoke our language, but why should we expect them to know it? An attitude of entitlement will not go as far, nor is it as kind, as a simple “English please?”

Tips for Traveling in Europe

Kindness makes the world more beautiful!

In general, Europeans seem much more relaxed and easy-going than Americans. For example, we boarded a train in Germany headed to Amsterdam, our last stop. A few minutes in, hubby’s all settled, reviewing work documents on his tablet, and I’m reading. Since the announcements were in German, we’d mostly ignored them, but I caught a snippet of somewhat identifiable words.

“Technical difficulties. Depart. Bus.”

Twenty minutes later, the train stopped and passengers loaded up and began to exit. We found a kind, English-speaking soul who informed us that, indeed, we were to exit the train and wait for a bus to take us to our final destination.

Tips for Traveling in Europe

No complaints from anybody!

No complaints from anybody. If that happened in America, don’t you know somebody would make their displeasure known loud enough for everybody to hear.

Three or four buses and an hour later, we’re rolling along on the bus, people stuffed in like sardines in a tin, standing and sitting all along the aisle. Suddenly, there’s a commotion and good-natured laughter permeates the bus. Of course, because of the language barrier, we have no idea why.

Border patrol. Checking passports and identification of Every. Single. Person. On. The. Bus.

Really?

Still, not one person complained during the entire trip to Amsterdam. Even when another train cancelled, forcing those same passengers to take yet another train and backtrack to their destination. One of those sweet travelers had spent her savings to take a university class that she was in danger of missing. Another was extremely late for a new job. Yet, the whole day, they laughed and smiled and rolled with the punches.

Me? I’m glad I found the water closet on the train. 🙂

Cruise versus land

Tips for Traveling in Europe

Cruising on the Celebrity Constellation

We’ve done both now, and can’t really say which we prefer. Both offer tremendous value. It’s like choosing from your favorite ice cream flavors. Do you feel like coconut today or espresso chocolate chip? Here are some items to consider:

With land travel…

You pack and unpack often. On a cruise ship, you unpack once and have a home base every night.

You dive deeper into the cultures of each city. With cruising, you visit multiple ports, but a shorter duration and may not even have the opportunity to sample local cuisine. Eating local could be a pro or a con, though. In Venice, the majority of restaurants are Italian. If you don’t like Italian food, you might not want to plan a week-long stay there. 🙂

You choose to stay or move on. With cruising, your itinerary is pretty much set, except for inclement weather or unforeseen circumstances.

Bottom line, there’s work/research involved in both methods of traveling. Even cruising, we still research prices of airline tickets, excursion choices and pre/post cruise stays. We initially thought we’d have more control over our day, but considering the train incident above, maybe not. 🙂

If your idea of a perfect vacation is to be pampered, definitely go the cruise route. If you enjoy more freedom and flexibility and don’t mind the exercise, opt to travel by land.

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?

Which travel method would you choose? Land or cruise?

Set Your Own Pace

Every time she came down from a box jump, she’d do a little dance in between steps. Beautiful and truly art…but really? Several of the women stared. A couple moaned. One even joked about pushing her off the box. Did I mention that she was right next to me? I was tempted to match her pace, but I didn’t. I could never sustain it.

Excited about Eating by Ernie Hiers

This edition of Exciting about Eating takes us to Joe’s Doughs, a small family bakery making hand crafted artisan donuts in the NoDa neighborhood of Charlotte.

Good thing hubby was paying attention. I’d have missed it.

Dora here. I rarely like to go out for breakfast because why pay for cereal? But it was Ernie’s birthday, and he enjoys breakfast out. So there you have it. 🙂

Hope they ramp up their selection

This doughnut place is not like most, where they have the same types of doughnuts every day. Joe’s Doughs offers a limited variety and the selection changes every 45 minutes or so, so you’re guaranteed a fresh bite.

Bummer. Only 6 types.

Dora here. Because I’d scoped out the menu beforehand, I expected to drool over Espresso Cake and Candied Lemon, but they weren’t there! OH NO! That’s okay. My initial disappointment didn’t last long. lol.

In order to get a true taste, we chose 4 different selections and shared. Dora here. Yep, straight down the middle. No cheating.

The Sea Salt Chocolate Caramel doughnut was outstanding, a yeast doughnut that was sweet and salty, but I could not pick up the chocolate. Dora here. I have to disagree with hubby here. This doughnut was my least favorite because the chocolate and caramel flavors were so light, I couldn’t taste either over the salt. Not that I left any of my half, mind you. haha

Bottom Left-PB&J, Bottom Top-Goat Cheese Strawberry Balsamic, Top Right-Sea Salt Chocolate Caramel, Bottom Right-Coconut Banana Caramel Cake

The PB&J was  great, but everything is always better with peanut butter. This yeast doughnut was primed with strawberry filling and covered with creamy peanut butter. If you closed your eyes, you would think that you were eating a PB&J sandwich. Dora here. The PB&J was another surprise, mainly because I’m not a huge PB fan. But it wasn’t overly heavy on the PB taste and the thick strawberry jam filling oozed out. The texture was such that we couldn’t decide whether the doughnut was yeast or cake. A staff member verified that it was indeed yeast.

The Goat Cheese Strawberry Balsamic, although good, was my least favorite. It was also a yeast doughnut covered in goat cheese and drizzled with strawberry and balsamic. The doughnut was really fruity and only had a hint of cheese. Dora here. My second fave — surprise, surprise –was the Goat Cheese Strawberry Balsamic. I so wasn’t expecting that. Sweet, but not sugary. Light and delish!

In case you needed to feast your eyes on these beauties from a different angle. 🙂

The final selection was the Coconut Banana Caramel Cake. Outstanding! It was the only cake doughnut we tried and it did not disappoint, full of favor and almost tasted like a piece of cake. Dora here. My favorite was the Banana Coconut Caramel Cake, and it represented its name well. The only cake doughnut here, it reminded me of a thick, generous slice of banana bread. Yum!

Overall the doughnuts were not as I expected, in a good way. You know how you dread that heavy, bloated feeling or the sugar rush that comes from eating doughnuts? That didn’t happen. Maybe because we snacked on a few cheese curds before we left home? If they upped their number of selections and offered more coffee choices (like lattes), I might be convinced to go out for breakfast more often. Oh, you might want to check out their Instagram photos, but be prepared to drool. Don’t say I didn’t warn you. 🙂

What’s your favorite doughnut? And do you prefer yeast or cake?

We rate this establishment 4 forks out of 5 for a family friendly place serving great food.
