Good thing hubby was paying attention. I’d have missed it.

Dora here. I rarely like to go out for breakfast because why pay for cereal? But it was Ernie’s birthday, and he enjoys breakfast out. So there you have it. 🙂

Hope they ramp up their selection

This doughnut place is not like most, where they have the same types of doughnuts every day. Joe’s Doughs offers a limited variety and the selection changes every 45 minutes or so, so you’re guaranteed a fresh bite.

Bummer. Only 6 types.

Dora here. Because I’d scoped out the menu beforehand, I expected to drool over Espresso Cake and Candied Lemon, but they weren’t there! OH NO! That’s okay. My initial disappointment didn’t last long. lol.

In order to get a true taste, we chose 4 different selections and shared. Dora here. Yep, straight down the middle. No cheating.

The Sea Salt Chocolate Caramel doughnut was outstanding, a yeast doughnut that was sweet and salty, but I could not pick up the chocolate. Dora here. I have to disagree with hubby here. This doughnut was my least favorite because the chocolate and caramel flavors were so light, I couldn’t taste either over the salt. Not that I left any of my half, mind you. haha

Bottom Left-PB&J, Bottom Top-Goat Cheese Strawberry Balsamic, Top Right-Sea Salt Chocolate Caramel, Bottom Right-Coconut Banana Caramel Cake

The PB&J was  great, but everything is always better with peanut butter. This yeast doughnut was primed with strawberry filling and covered with creamy peanut butter. If you closed your eyes, you would think that you were eating a PB&J sandwich. Dora here. The PB&J was another surprise, mainly because I’m not a huge PB fan. But it wasn’t overly heavy on the PB taste and the thick strawberry jam filling oozed out. The texture was such that we couldn’t decide whether the doughnut was yeast or cake. A staff member verified that it was indeed yeast.

The Goat Cheese Strawberry Balsamic, although good, was my least favorite. It was also a yeast doughnut covered in goat cheese and drizzled with strawberry and balsamic. The doughnut was really fruity and only had a hint of cheese. Dora here. My second fave — surprise, surprise –was the Goat Cheese Strawberry Balsamic. I so wasn’t expecting that. Sweet, but not sugary. Light and delish!

In case you needed to feast your eyes on these beauties from a different angle. 🙂

The final selection was the Coconut Banana Caramel Cake. Outstanding! It was the only cake doughnut we tried and it did not disappoint, full of favor and almost tasted like a piece of cake. Dora here. My favorite was the Banana Coconut Caramel Cake, and it represented its name well. The only cake doughnut here, it reminded me of a thick, generous slice of banana bread. Yum!

Overall the doughnuts were not as I expected, in a good way. You know how you dread that heavy, bloated feeling or the sugar rush that comes from eating doughnuts? That didn’t happen. Maybe because we snacked on a few cheese curds before we left home? If they upped their number of selections and offered more coffee choices (like lattes), I might be convinced to go out for breakfast more often. Oh, you might want to check out their Instagram photos, but be prepared to drool. Don’t say I didn’t warn you. 🙂

What’s your favorite doughnut? And do you prefer yeast or cake?

We rate this establishment 4 forks out of 5 for a family friendly place serving great food.

Island Hub Restaurant & Lounge Don’t let the exterior deceive you!

This Caribbean restaurant specializes in Haitian Cuisine including jerks, curries, and other island dishes.

Dora here. Don’t let the rather plain outside deter you from giving Island Hub a try. The interior was nice and clean. But empty!?

Granted, it’s new, but this place should be jammed!

Where is everybody? Granted this eatery just opened in March, but this place should be jammed! Maybe the lack of patrons has something to do with the neighborhood, which looked a bit…tired. Or it could be that Yelp indicated they open at 11:30 on Sunday, but the sign on the door showed noon. Oops. Whatever, they were accommodating and friendly by letting us in early. Thank you, Island Hub!

After living most of my life in Florida, I have tasted a wide variety of island foods prepared many different ways, so I was optimistic going into this restaurant. For my lunch, I chose my absolute favorite, Griot, fried pork chunks marinated with a seasoning blend along with sides of cabbage and collard greens. This dish was outstanding; the pork was well seasoned, fried to perfection and served with an equally good dipping sauce. The cabbage was great, cooked al dente, with just the right amount of bite and as a twist, included thinly sliced carrots. The collard greens were full of flavor and delish. This place is a gem that’s waiting to be discovered. And we did.

Griot, fried pork chunks with cabbage and greens. Delish!

Dora here. Somehow I knew Ernie wouldn’t share his fried pork chunks. But take a look at that serving size! Sheesh, I only managed to snag a tiny bite. 🙂 So I settled for the Curry Chicken, Mac & Cheese, and Fried Plantains. lol. Just kidding, no settling involved. With a bold, hearty flavor, the chicken curry teased my palate but didn’t burn my mouth. The Mac & Cheese was just the right texture, firm and cheesy, and soooo good. Be aware, though, that the chicken comes on the bone. Doesn’t this picture make you want some? Drooling again…

Curry Chicken with Mac & Cheese and Fried Sweet Plantains. Huge portions. Bold, hearty flavors without burning my mouth. YUM!

Giant portions, great value, and friendly service. Let’s fill this place!

What’s your spice level? Chicken, on bone or off bone?

This edition of Excited about Eating takes us to Pearlz Oyster and Raw Bar located in the StoneCrest at Piper Glen Shopping Center in Ballantyne, NC.

Pearlz Oyster Bar

What a gigantic shopping center! Took a little while to find this gem.

Dora here. What a massive, eclectic shopping center! Restaurants, boutiques, salon, spa…even a Target and Harris Teeter. I could happily lose myself in here for days.

This restaurant offers fresh seafood in a casual dining environment with an outside patio. Now, if you follow our blog much, you know it is not too often that I can talk my wife into experiencing a seafood restaurant, but it was Father’s Day, so what could she say.

Dora here. Anything for you, honey. ❤

Clean and modern interior, but it was such a beautiful day, most everyone ate outside.

We ordered a side of Corn Fritters as an appetizer. Served with a dose of powdered sugar, these fritters were crusty (Dora here. I told him he couldn’t use the word “crispy” again today, and this is what he comes up with, lol) on the outside and soft on the inside with nuggets of fresh corn and red pepper. The fritters were great but I missed a dipping sauce to be enjoyed while eating them.

Dora here. YUM! These babies were fluffy and light, with occasional glimmers of corn and red pepper flecks. The touch of sweet from the powdered sugar made us debate whether they tasted more savory than sweet. Great start to our meal! Don’t they look delicious?

Corn fritters, sweet or savory? Not sure which won, but they were a great start to our meal!

I chose the New England Lobster Roll with a side of homemade chips and a cup of seafood gumbo. Now I know you will say that is a lot of seafood, but when you do not get it too often, you have to load up on it when you get a chance. (Dora here. Haha.) The lobster roll was creamy, tender and tasty, and served on a grilled roll capable of handling this full-bodied sandwich. Outstanding!

New England Lobster Roll – Creamy, tender and tasty. Outstanding!

The gumbo was packed with rice, sausage, beans, shrimp, and some other ingredients that I could not identify because I devoured it too fast. Hardy flavor and just the right amount of heat. Another thumbs up!

Seafood Gumbo – thumbs up!

Dora here. Take a gander at the Crab Sandwich. Yowza! What’s not to love about a buttery soft bun barely containing all that crabilicious flavor? The broccoli slaw wasn’t mayo based, so I used it as another condiment for my sandwich, which added another texture and layer of flavors. Delicious! And I’m not a fan of tomatoes, but those super tiny maters on this sandwich were so fresh and sweet, I ate every one of them! Just don’t tell my mother. lol
