Excited about Eating by Ernie & Dora Hiers

This edition of Excited about Eating takes us to Banner Elk, NC, and to The Pedalin’ Pig BBQ, a locally owned and operated restaurant using local sourced ingredients. Besides the normal BBQ options, this regional favorite also offers tacos, salads, and a bunch of different sides.

Huge with several different eating spaces

Dora here. We’ve eaten at this location a couple of times now. The interior is a bit tired and worn, yet still gives off that homey, comfortable vibe. It’s also huge, with several different eating spaces. But I can’t wait until the weather warms and we can sit outdoors.

Huge interior. Homey and comfy, a bit tired and worn.

We started with the Pork Rinds with “pig spice.” Crispy, full of pork flavor, and as always with pork rinds, it’s hard to stop eating them once you start. Dora here. Actually, Ernie, you started with the pork rinds. Not a fan of pork rinds anywhere.

Pork Rinds appetizer: hard to stop eating once you start

For my lunch, I chose The Worker’s Lunch Special, which included a pulled pork sandwich with house-made chips, slaw, and a drink all for $6.95, what a deal. The pulled pork was tender, smoky, and full of that wonderful pork bark. The slaw was sweet and made a perfect addition when I added it to my pulled pork sandwich and the chips were light, thin, and flawlessly cooked.

The Worker’s Lunch Special: Pork sandwich was tender, smoky, and full of that wonderful pork bark

Dora here. Today, the Worker’s Lunch Special came with either brisket or pork. I opted for brisket. Can you believe you can get all this food plus the drink for only $6.95?? The brisket was tender, just enough fat to make it juicy, and blanketed with a light layer of sauce to give it a nice sheen. I don’t care for North Carolina Barbeque Red slaw (with ketchup). This is my favorite kind of slaw, creamy and sweet, and adds a nice texture when added to the sandwich. I only ate a few of the house-made chips, but they were nice and crispy.

The Worker’s Lunch Special with Brisket. Such a bargain for only $6.95, including drink!

Which would you choose, pork or brisket?

We rate this restaurant 4 forks out of 5 for a family friendly restaurant serving great food.

When You Wonder If Anybody Is Listening…and that nasty 5 letter word

Sometimes I can’t help but wonder if anybody is listening…

When that beloved friend or family member interrupts and continues on as if what I was saying doesn’t matter or they weren’t interested enough to listen. Everybody has one, right? Or am I the only one?

Or those rare times when I peek at my reviews, and I’m kind of shocked at the low number, especially for my books that have been out there for years. Granted, I probably don’t spend enough time seeking out reviews on the front end, before a book releases. But you’d think that just the sheer amount of time would generate some feedback. Even just a sentence?

Then, DOUBT…

That nasty five letter word slithers in. Seriously, that word, friends. It’s from the enemy. It makes me wonder if anybody is listening. If anybody even wants to read my stories. If what I’m pouring my heart and soul into is even worth my time. As a writer, am I doing enough? As a person, am I enough?

faith quote Dora Hiers Tori Kayson Fiction Faith & Foodies

It is the same with my word. I send it out, and it always produces fruit. It will accomplish all I want it to, and it will prosper everywhere I sent it. Isa 55:11 (NLT)

Frustrated and discouraged, I skim over a few reviews, and this one snags my attention.

“Her stories are exciting and I find myself staying up late to finish reading – a sure sign of a great book.”

And this one.

“A very well written story of grace and forgiveness.”

So, I may not ever figure out how to stop that loved one from barreling right over my spoken words. Or maybe, with this particular person, I’m to practice listening rather than talking.

And as for my written words, what I need to focus more on is…

TRUST

Trusting my heavenly Father. That what He’s placed in my heart will bear fruit. That my work will accomplish all He wants, that He holds my time in His hands. That the message of His amazing love and His limitless grace will prosper and blossom wherever He plants it.

What about you? Do you struggle with doubt and trust? Wonder if anybody’s listening? I’m here. I’m listening…

Excited about Eating by Ernie & Dora Hiers

This edition of Excited about Eating takes us to the Elizabeth neighborhood in Charlotte and to Sabor Latin Street Grill. Sabor in Spanish means flavorful, an apt description for this contemporary Latin restaurant.

A private parking lot is always a bonus!

Dora here. While we were eating, the line to order extended out the door. If you’d like a parking spot, get your act in gear and get there early. Their lot’s small, but private off-street parking is always a bonus. Oh, and if you need to charge your device, the booths have USB chargers. Really? Wowza! Definitely not fancy or intimate, but awesome food.

While we were eating, the line extended out the door. Get there early!

If you use the Yelp app, be sure to check in and get your free chips, which we totally forgot, but chips would’ve been overkill since Ernie ordered nachos. Oh, and try out the five or six salsas on their Salsa Bar, especially the Pineapple. You’d think sweet, right? Not sure I tasted anything sweet, nothing but pure fire. That stuff straightened my hair! lol.

For my lunch, I ordered the Supreme Nachos, a giant pile of tortilla chips, hamburger, refried beans, queso, lettuce, sour cream and pico do gallo. Now these were monster nachos and not a dish that could be finished by one person. The chips were crispy, it was loaded with hamburger, and all of the other ingredients worked perfectly together to make one great tasting dish.

Supreme Nachos, not just for one person!

The Elote Loco is corn on the cob lightly coated with mayo and covered with cotija cheese then dusted with chili powder. This corn was outstanding, a little sweet, with a creamy flavor from the mayo and a little spice from the chili powder. Dora here. Best corn on the cob ever! Sweet, spicy, and every bite a different flavor. My favorite dish of the day.

Elote Loco

Still Dora. So many items on the menu, only so much time to eat! lol. Seriously, folks, we could’ve just shared that huge pile of nachos. But I’d been drooling over the pictures on Yelp, and with our limited weekend dining options, I knew that I wanted more than nachos. When I got to the front of the counter, I ordered the first two dishes that caught my attention, a Beef Empanada and a Chicken Arepa. With a crispy shell and a gooey, cheesy filling, the Beef Empanada was my second favorite dish on the table.

With a crispy shell and a gooey, cheesy filling, the Beef Empanada was my second favorite dish on the table. Chicken Arepa on the right.

The chicken arepa came overflowing with cheese and bundled in a soft, cakey shell. I wasn’t quite sure how to eat it, but since it was wrapped in foil, I suspect you’re supposed to pick it up. Hmmm. That didn’t work for me as well as knife and fork. The rosada sauce (a blend of ketchup and mayo and other condiments) was cool and soothing after that crazy-hot pineapple salsa. When we make it back, I’m going for the Carne Asada Fries or the Build-Your-Own-Bowl. And maybe I’ll remember to check in on Yelp to get the free chips for my pineapple salsa. 😀

We debated the rating for Sabor Latin Street Grill. Immediately after every meal, we both offer up our ratings. Hubby planned to give them four forks, his argument being that ordering from the counter detracts from the experience. I agree that I prefer to order from the table, but was that one tiny aspect enough to drop them from a five fork rating to four? Since we started this food blogging venture, we have always based our reviews on the whole experience: quality of food, value, ambiance, service, etc. So, in line with that, we rate them four fork for a family friendly restaurant serving great food. (But it was really awesome! 🙂 )

How do you feel about restaurants where you order at the counter?
